about

If there is a single film that one could point to as a quintessential representation of 80's horror, Return of the Living Dead might just be it.
The time period's excess was often reflected in horror movies by ridiculous concepts and laughable kitsch that require nostalgia to appreciate today, but the 1985 classic still works today without the need for disclaimers. Through a series of circumstances Dan O'Bannon came to the director's chair to assemble a new approach to the zombie story which resulted in an iconic horror-comedy that expanded the genre and created a new mythos (braaaaiins).

Whether is was the chemistry of an eclectic cast, the spark in the dialogue, the earnest performances, the crazy set pieces, the effects, the subtle humour on top of slapstick humour (Ernie was a nazi, right?), Return of the Living Dead is a definite fan favourite of the era and the genre. We dig deep into our own perspectives on the film and its lasting impact, before travelling the long and winding road of the franchise as a whole. The missteps of the follow up could be blamed on the shallow understanding of the value of sequels at the time but we found a few gems to point out. The divergence of Part 3 from the original's tone delivered the first straight horror installment but the question stands - does the edgy goth zombie character still work? And then there is Necropolis and Rave to the Grave....! We kept a straight face and gave these cheapo films the most attention we could muster.

An odd franchise to be sure. There is a split somewhere but the exact line where is debatable. One thing is certain, the original stands above and beyond the follow up films and well-deserves its iconic status.

Many thanks for checking out the retrospective - it was a lot of fun to cover and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
